Throughout her professional career, Dr. Melissa Shaffer has worked in several capacities with children and their families. Prior to entering the field of education, Melissa earned a BS in Psychology from Clarion University. During her summer break, Melissa worked at Beacon Lodge, a camp run by the Lions Club organization for children and adults with disabilities. This is where she discovered her love and passion of working with individuals with disabilities. After obtaining her bachelor's degree, she worked for approximately 5 years to support families within their homes and communities. While working at this agency, Dr. Shaffer was able to work simultaneously on her teaching certificate in Special Education and her Master's Degree in Special Education at the Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP). After graduation, Melissa worked as an emotional support teacher, and as an autistic support teacher. During that time, she enrolled within St. Francis University for her Supervisor of Special Education certificate. She has worked as a special education leader for 18 years and has obtained her Doctorate in Administration and Leadership. She resides with her husband and two daughters in Portage, PA and remains an active member of the Lion’s Club.
