Amy Fingerhut is a Reading Instructor at the Washington Literacy Center. She developed and currently teaches an intensive reading course for adults reading below 6th grade level, which incorporates direct phonetic instruction with higher-level thinking activities. Amy received her Bachelor’s Degree in French Studies from the American University in Paris. She received her MEd in Elementary Education from John Carroll University and taught in Shaker Heights, Ohio before relocating to Washington with her family. She has received training in the use of Color Vowel Approach, and is a certified Wilson instructor. She completed Certification in Adult Education at the University of the District of Columbia. As part of her Certificate program, Amy created and piloted “Supporting Your Child’s Literacy”, a class for parents of school age children. Although Amy began her career as an elementary school teacher, there is nothing she enjoys more than teaching adults to read. She is constantly inspired by their hard work and determination to improve their lives and the lives of their families through education.
